Jerilderie 2008 31st Annual Thermal Duration
Tournament
Directives & Rules

The directives and rules contained below are for use during the LSF annual thermal duration tournament held at the Jerilderie Race Course between 7th to9th June 2008.

1. Registration
All pilots are required to register in Jerilderie with an LSF nominated representative. Registration requires each pilot showing their:

  • FAI Card with expiry date 30th June 2008.
  • Transmitter certification for all frequencies required to complete the event.

Failure to meet any of these requirements will exclude the pilot from participating in the event.

Registration is preferred between 8pm and 10pm on Friday evening at the Colony Inn. Otherwise pilots may register at the field on Saturday morning prior to commencing the event.

2. Frequencies and Use of Frequency Keys
Frequencies allocated in the draw must be adhered to. A frequency scanner will be in operation for the duration of the event to reduce the possibility of two people operating on one frequency. In the event of an 'incident' and a pilot is deemed to be at fault, they will be liable for any resultant damage. The pilot may also be excluded from the remainder of the event. Silvertone 2-inch keys are to be used for all keyboard operations.

3. Model(s)
Pilots are to thoroughly inspect their models just prior to the event and ensure that they are in a fit condition for the contest being flown.

4. Launch Equipment
Pilots are to inspect their launching equipment and ensure it is safe to use and in good working order. Winch drum-enlarging devices (if used) must be firmly secured so that they will not 'fly' off the drum under any circumstances.

5. Flying
Pilots are requested to use aerodynamic braking to lose excessive height instead of high speed passes over the field. If requested by the Contest Director (CD) the pilot will follow the instructions issued to all pilots or specifically issued to the individual pilot(s). This also includes requests to land immediately if unforseen circumstances arise.

Flying over the pits/flight-line under 15m is prohibited. The CD has the right to exercise punitive measures to enforce compliance.

Pilots flying outside of the advertised time for the contest are to fly to MAAA safety guidelines.

The Jerilderie Racecourse has been booked by the LSF for additional flying only for Friday 6th June.

6. Australian Open Thermal Rules Apply
Please refer to the MAAA rules listed here. (.PDF)
Also refer to additional local rules for this event outlined below.

6.1 Local Rule 1.
Two models are permitted during the working time of each pilot. This rule is a variation/adaptation of the current F3J rules. It is now possible to still score in a working time period even if a pilot causes his own 'zero score' such as a model breaking on launch. The use of a second model is only possible when there are no situations that the pilot has obstructed in any form other competitor(s) from achieving their own attempt.

6.2. Local Rule 2.
Launch Penalty. A team may only launch a team member’s model for the first launch attempt when they have a person positioned behind their turn-around who is solely dedicated to their team. Their responsibility is to clear any line problems that may result from the launch. The pilot will incur a 100 point penalty if a breach of this rule occurs. A penalty will not occur if the helper is engaged in clearing a line after the first launch attempt and still involved in this activity when 'his' team makes a second launch.

6.3. Local rule 3.
Landing. No penalty for landing outside 100m from the designated landing area assigned to the event.

6.4. Local Rule 4.
Timing. Teams are solely responsible for their own timing. A zero score will be recorded if there is a timing failure. No re-flight will be issued. Flight time ends when: The model becomes obscured from view. The model ceases moving on the ground. Working time ends (regardless if the model is still in flight).

6.5. Local Rule 5.
Two way low power transceivers. Low power two way radios are permitted. Typically radios of less than 300mw and on UHF frequency ie 'Dick Smith' brand CB units are suitable.

6.6. Local Rule 6.
Battery Rule. Winch Batteries will comply with the following total dimensions. Length + Width + Height = 625mm.

6.7 Local Rule 7.
Hand Launch Glider (HLG).
HLG will be flown within the 3-day event with a minimum of 3 rounds to be completed. Pilots are responsible for organisation a timer / score keeper for this event.

6.8 Local Rule 8.
Perpetual Trophies. Could all pilots please return any perpetualtrophies and deliver them to Brad Wilman on day 1 - Saturday

6.9
Local Rule 9.
Competitors to adhere to the winch rule. Get the Winch Rule (MSWord 23KB).
