The Jerilderie Tournament
Every year glider pilots from around Australia descend on a peaceful country town in the middle of Australia for 3 days of hotly-contested flying. There are great prizes to be won including kits, radio gear, servos etc. thanks to generous support from Australian retailers.

The Venue
With the ongoing support of the Jerilderie Shire, the local race track is transformed into an excellent venue to host Australia's premier thermal gliding competition. Trees fringe the racetrack but seldom pose a problem for flyers. This area of Australia is flat as far as the eye can see.

Pilots from all over Australia and overseas are drawn to this event for a variety of reasons; it offers them a chance to compete against the best competition flyers in the country, it's a time to catch up with old friends, an opportunity to have fun and compete at your own level and it's a great June long-weekend holiday away.

Up to 90 pilots attend, which means it is certainly one of the biggest single competitions in Australia. Contestants fly in teams of up to 6 pilots.

If the weather is kind, 12 to 14 rounds of " Australian Open Thermal Rules" (400KB PDF) are flown over Saturday, Sunday and Monday.

With 3 or 4 days to "play" there is a lot of socialising to be crammed in between each day's flying. The local businesses extend their hospitality and the townfolk are most welcoming, providing hot food and drinks on the flying field and a terrific dinner on Saturday evening. A constant supply of bacon and egg sandwiches fend off the chills on those early mornings. (thanks to the local Lions Club).

On Monday, after the dust settles and the prize giving is over, for most, it's time for reflection on things we were gonna- do this "Jerilderie".

Load all the trophies into the car, book the motel and start getting the gear ready; there is always next year.
